School of Sport & Public Services

Students who commenced Vocational Sport and Public Services in 2011 now study at our brand new State of the Art facilities in Llandarcy.

As well as the fantastic sports facilities which include an elite, national standard multi-use sports hall, climbing wall, all weather 3 G pitch, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and indoor bounding track with warm up area, the teaching facilities are second to none. They include five new teaching rooms, interactive boards, a fully equipped Electronic Learning Centre and student common room.

We offer 12 Full-Time/Part-Time Further and Higher Education courses, ranging from Level 1 to Foundation Degree courses. As a simple overview, the current provision targets curriculum needs from AS/A Level Physical Education to all levels of Vocational BTEC subjects in Sport and levels 1-3 in Public Services.

In addition to the main Vocational Sports Qualifications we offer students additional qualifications alongside their main courses; these include NVQ Activity Leadership L2, Coaching Teaching and Instruction L2, CYQ Level 2 Fitness Instructor's Award and Community Sports Leader Award is currently offered to AS Physical Education students on the Neath Campus. Level 2 students also study Welsh Baccalaureate at Intermediate level alongside their main qualification. All first year L3 Extended Diploma in Sports students are trained as Dragon Sports volunteers and work in their local communities.

In 2011 the Uniformed Public Services courses moved from the Afan Campus to the Llandarcy Campus. Students can study from Level 1 to Level 3 courses in Uniformed Public Services which provide full time academic study combined with a wide variety of additional career experiences provided by a range of Uniformed Public Services such as Fire Service, Army, Navy and RAF. Students experience overnight camp, expeditions and talks by visiting specialists.

The School of Sport and Public Services consists of experienced lecturers and two Instructor/technicians. The students are supported not only by their personal tutor who they will see at least one a week, but also by a network of support staff for all learning requirements.

The move from the National Qualifications Framework in to the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales has resulted in the School making some changes in the course portfolio over recent years. Students who find it difficult to cope with the rigours of a full qualification can leave at the end of their course with a qualification at a lower level. Level 1 students following a Diploma (37 credits) could achieve a Certificate (13 credits) or a Level 1 Award (7 credits). Similarly students who are unable to fulfil all requirements for the Extended Diploma in Sport or Public Services could achieve a Diploma, Subsidiary Diploma or Level 3 Certificate.

In partnership with the LFE and Swansea City FC the School is also providing the educational strand of the NVQ 3 MA scheme for Swansea City’s Youth Squad. The College was also recognised as one of the four regional educational centres for the WRU to operate their 'Rugby Industry' project providing support to their Elite Academy Squad members.

There is some cost recovery work done in the School through the provision of AS/A Level PE Revision Courses . Since the re-location of the School to the Llandarcy Park Campus we have forged stronger links with the Ospreys Regional Rugby Squad, Swansea City FC, the WNA, WRU, WHU, FAW and other governing bodies of sport. The provision of NVQ’s in partnership with Sporttrain is still very productive with over 90 students gaining these additional qualifications. The partnership has also enabled us to run Part-Time CYQ Fitness Instructor's courses in the evenings for those already in employment but wishing to gain additional fitness qualifications.

We will remain as one of the Schools to maintain the franchise arrangement with the University of Glamorgan to offer the Level 4 /5 HE courses, such as HNC and the Foundation Degree in Performance and Coaching.

The School prides itself on its Activities programme and offers student athletes the opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities and sports. The School runs six Sports Academies and teams from these are not only local and national champions but also International champions. The clubs provide opportunities to compete in the Welsh Colleges Championships in a variety of sporting events from individual activities such as Swimming, Tennis, Cross Country and Golf to team events such as Rugby, Football and Netball. The School of Sport and Public services also works very closely win partnership with the Local Authority and Sport Wales in funding a 5x30 officer who has the remit to promote health and well being for all staff and students across the College by offering a range of recreational activities outside the traditional elite performance programmes. NPTC was the first college in Wales to support this initiative.
