School of Sport & Public Services

The School of Sport and Public Services provides 12 full-time/part-time Further and Higher Education courses, which range from Entry Level to Foundation Degree courses. As a simple overview, the current provision targets curriculum needs from AS/A Level to Vocational BTEC subjects in Sport and Physical Education.

Student numbers for the academic year 2007/2008 record over 300 full-time students. In addition to the main qualification students are encouraged to take additional qualifications alongside their main courses, these include NVQ Activity Leadership L2, Coaching Teaching and Instruction L2 and CSLA. All first year National Diploma students are trained as Dragon Sports volunteers and work in their local communities.

The School prides itself on its Activities programme and offers student athletes the opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities and sports. The School runs six Sports Academies and teams from these are not only local and national champions but also International champions. In February 2007, the College rugby squad won the Welsh Schools U18 National Cup for a record 9th time and were also Rugby World Magazine Team of the Month for June, we must be the only school or college in the UK to be able to say that. The Netball Talent Centre is responsible for nurturing and developing junior talent in the area and the senior teams were Welsh Colleges Winners in 2007 and also reached the last eight of the British National Cup competition.

The School of Sport and Public Services consists of 16 full-time lecturers and two support staff. There is also a gym technician working in the Colleges Cwrt Herbert Power Gym.

Changes in the National Qualifications framework have resulted in the School making some changes in the course portfolio for this academic year. Courses such as the National Certificate have been developed to cater for First Diploma students who find it difficult to cope with the rigours of an 18-unit Diploma. In partnership with the LFE and Swansea City FC the School is also providing the educational strand of the NVQ 3 MA scheme for Swansea City’s Youth Squad. The College is also recognised as one of the four regional educational centres for the WRU to operate their 'Rugby Industry' project providing support to their ten Elite Academy Squad members.

There is some cost recovery work done in the School through the provision of AS/A Level PE Revision Courses. Since the re-location of the School to the Llandarcy Park Campus we have forged stronger links with the Ospreys Regional Rugby Squad, Swansea City FC the WNA, WRU, WHU, FAW and other governing bodies of sport. The provision of NVQ’s in partnership with Sporttrain is still very productive with over 90 students awaiting these additional qualifications. We have entered into discussion with the University of Glamorgan to expand our HE provision in the area with the development of some Level 3 HE courses and Foundation Degrees in Performance and Coaching.
