School of Mathematics and Science

The School of Mathematics and Science is involved in the delivery of a wide range of courses including traditional academic courses as well as some exciting new vocational courses. Currently at the Neath campus, the following subjects are available at AS/A level: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Geology, Human Biology, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. There is a slightly smaller choice of subjects at the Afan campus: at present, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology are offered. GCSE courses in Mathematics and Science (Single Award) are available at both campuses. Advanced Level students are also able to combine Welsh Baccalaureate qualification with their studies.

Two new qualifications have recently been offered to students wanting to study science in a vocational context on the Neath campus. These include the BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science (Forensic Science) and the BTEC National Certificate in Applied Science (Medical Science). These are practical, work-related courses where students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. A National Diploma in Forensic Science is equivalent to three A Level passes at grades A-E, whereas a National Certificate in Medical Science is equivalent to two A Level passes at grades A-E. Students wishing to complete the National Certificate will be required to pick up a further AS subject alongside this qualification (AS Chemistry is recommended).  A ‘Crime Scene Room’ has also been set up within the school to enable students to collect forensic evidence from a simulated crime scene and analyse the results in the laboratory.

As well as being highly qualified and experienced, lecturing staff are approachable, friendly and supportive. They make every effort to allow students to reach their full potential. As a result, the examination results at A Level show consistently high levels of attainment, often above those of National comparators.

A wide range of teaching and learning strategies are employed including a growing use of interactive whiteboards and the VLE/Digital Brain/ MOODLE. Key Skills are fully integrated into schemes of work.  Facilities are provided for private study including ICT within the School's suite of rooms.

The majority of the School's full-time students progress to higher education courses; these are diverse in nature and reflect individual career aspirations.
