School of Building Engineering Services

The School of Building Engineering Services offers both full-time and part-time and commercial programmes of study designed to meet the needs of this highly innovative and fast moving sector of industry. We have extensive links with employers and industry within Wales and further afield.
 

The delivery of Our programmes in Building Engineering Services covers Electrical, Gas Technology, Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation, Energy Efficiency and Advice and Renewable Technologies and is delivered across our three main campuses:
 

Afan Campus

This is our Energy Academy which administers the National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies where we operate the South Wales central HUB for the network of providers in environmental technologies such as:
• Solar PV (photovoltaic) micro-generation Wind Turbine micro-generation Solar Thermal Heating systems Heat Pump (Air and Ground Source) heating systems Rainwater Harvesting and Grey water Recycling Biomass heating systems Underfloor heating (both electrical and water filled) Wall and loft Insulation Installation and Building Treatment

We also deliver as one of the primary providers of the Domestic and Non-Domestic Green Deal Energy Advisor qualifications at L3 and L4 This qualification has arisen from Government initiatives to encourage Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. The Home
Energy Adviser role is key to delivering the Green Deal scheme implemented by the UK Government. Advisers will be trained to visit homes, provide accurate assessments of the property, identify opportunities for improvement in energy efficiency and provide the relevant recommendations that will help to make savings in fuel bills and carbon emissions. This qualification is recognised by Welsh and UK Governments as the roles are central to the future of creating a more sustainable environment and the development of experts in providing correct and accurate advice on our homes and buildings.

The Energy Academy also contains our Gas Safe ACS training and assessment centre. This has developed into one of the largest centres of its kind in Wales and has been recognised by the awarding body as a centre of excellence. Facilities are constantly being up dated to ensure the best training and assessment on both new and old equipment and systems is available.

Electrical courses
The Afan Campus has delivery of our Electrotechnical courses, full-time and part-time from Level 1 to Level 3. Our up to date workshops and classrooms enable us to deliver quality provision where the latest techniques and equipment are utilised to ensure learners are made ready for the demands of a changing and demanding modern industry.
A full range of Electrotechnical short courses covering Part P Building Regulations; 17th Edition Wiring Regulations (Full and Update courses); Fundamentals of Inspection and Testing L2; Design Verification & Inspection and Testing L3 and Portable Appliance Testing L3 are delivered both on and off campus subject to prearrangements with our electrical staff as well as commercial cost NVQ L3 courses.

Plumbing courses
We have successfully added this area of delivery to the Afan campus. Offering full time plumbing courses for building engineering services at level 1 (Certificate) and 2 (Diploma). Our modern workshop facilities have been remodelled to provide learners with all that s needed to access the plumbing industry.

Gas courses
The latest qualifications for entry into the Gas industry are delivered by experts in the field and benefit from being ACS aligned to improve quality of provision and safety in the workplace. The same staff who operate the Gas Safe training and Assessment deliver on this, thus ensuring the best outcome for all who choose this as their career path.

Neath Campus
Plumbing courses

The main Campus at Neath is where we deliver full-time Plumbing courses at Levels 1 and 2. These cover a Technical Certificate and NVQ allowing training for practical hand skills that prepare you for the industry sector of both Plumbing and Heating and Ventilation. All assessments are carried out in our recognised assessment centre ensuring all learners are given the best possible start in a career as one of Wales leading craft skills.
All classrooms offer modern teaching resources and facilities to make sure all and learners are encouraged in their learning.
 

Building Craft Training Centre (Llansamlet)
Plumbing courses
Our work-based training is delivered for apprentices at our Craft Training Centre in Llansamlet, Swansea. This is part of a very large training centre which also covers construction courses. The workshops are modernised and now include training in the new Environmental Technologies and Underfloor Heating.
All teaching classrooms have been modernised to ensure they are complete with all up to date teaching resources.
There is students facilities which include a five a side football pitch for let go some of that energy built up in the exciting learning environment on offer.
 

The School of Building Engineering Services offers these programmes of study commencing at Level 1 where no formal entry requirements are stated and to Level 3 up-skilling courses where placement on the programme is by predetermined criteria (which can be provided on request). All courses will include an interview with the Course Co-ordinator before acceptance onto the programmes.
We have facility for Welsh speakers to engage in a Welsh only provision through our on-line VLE Welsh speaker toolbox forum, where anyone can access delivery in Welsh if desired.
Specialist Learning support is also accessed through the Learning Coach forum nad can be accessed 24/7 totally confidentially.
