Welsh for Adults

We offer Welsh for Adults courses on behalf of the South West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre. The courses form part of a comprehensive programme of Welsh for Adults courses planned by the Centre and delivered by partners throughout south-west Wales. There are courses at all levels and of varying intensity.

All WfA courses are now named in accordance with the national progression framework for WfA, which consists of five levels. For students starting at the very beginning, our once-a-week courses will take you through Entry Level over two years, with a further two years at Foundation Level. Your learning will be accredited by the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC). After each year’s course, WJEC certificates will be awarded to students who have achieved certain levels, mainly in speaking (as opposed to writing) Welsh.

During the two years at Mynediad/Entry Level, the emphasis is very much on conversational Welsh. We start by learning how to pronounce Welsh, including local place names. We go on to greeting people and talking about the weather. During the first year, we learn how to chat about what we do every day and what we like/enjoy. We also start learning about how to talk about events in the past.

At Sylfaen/Foundation Level, you will expand on your speaking skills. Topics such as family, work and hobbies are included.

All courses run for two hours a week for 30 weeks.

Extra Practise

Every year, Neath Port Talbot College holds a ‘Talking Saturday’ (Sadwrn Siarad) where a full day’s revision session is provided at all of the levels of the College’s classes. These events provide an opportunity to meet and practise with students from other classes at the same level.

We also provide drop-in sessions in the Queen Street Centre, Neath, where students who are ready to practise chatting in Welsh in an informal setting can come along and meet other advanced students and supportive Welsh speakers.
